Auburn Tigers Shutout Mississippi State Bulldogs



The first score proved to be the game winner in this contest. The Auburn Tigers defense came to play. They didn’t allow a single score and held the Mississippi State offense to just 161 total yards. Meanwhile the Auburn Tigers offense put up scores in each of the four quarters. They were held to just a field goal in the 4th, but they put up 34 total points and beat the Bulldogs 34-0.

Tigers quarterback, Brandon Cox, was 18 of 27 for 249 yards. He threw for two touchdowns. His first touchdown was a 6 yard pass to Gabe McKenzie in the first quarter. In the third, he picked up another TD when he threw a 0 yard pass to Rodgeriqus Smith. His Bulldogs counterpart, Tray Rutland, was not so fortunate. He completed just under 50% of his passes—12 for 25—for 82 yards. He threw one interception.

The Tigers had 111 yards on the ground. Kenny Irons had 69 yards over 21 carries for Auburn. His 3.3 average was upstaged by teammate Brad Lester. Lester had 5 carries for 40 yards. He had one carry for 20 yards. Lester also had two rushing TD’s for Auburn. For the Bulldogs, Anthony Dixon had 15 carries for 69 yards—4.6 average. The top receiver of the day was Auburn’s Courtney Taylor. He had 9 receptions for 103 yards.

Auburn is ranked #3 in the current AP Top 25 poll. They also received two first place votes—probably by the school itself and perhaps Mississippi State. Next up for the Tigers is #6 LSU. It will be a real test for Auburn. They will be playing at home.
