The #2 team in the country, Florida Gators, fell on Saturday 27-17 to the Auburn Tigers who were ranked #11 at the time. Many had predicted that this would be too tough of a test for the Gators and they were right. Everything looked good at the half. The Gators were up 17-11 and seemed poised to take the game. However, the Tigers scored 16 points in the second half and their defense shut down the Gators—allowing 0 points.
The Florida Gators were just 1 for 7 on 3rd down conversions. That and their inability to protect the ball ultimately cost them. The Gators had 3 turnovers. They lost 2 fumbles and QB Chris Leak threw one interception. Speaking of Leak. He was 9 of 17 for 113 yards. He managed to throw 1 TD. It wasn’t his best performance.
The Gators did amass 171 yards on the ground. The load was split up, but Percy Harvin had the most with 66 yards—over 5 carries. However, his longest run was 35 yards, so that number is a bit misleading.
Auburn Tigers QB Brandon Cox was 18 of 27 for 182 yards. He didn’t throw a TD, but he was free of interceptions too. Brad Lester rushed for 94 yards over 17 carries. His longest went for 33 yards. Kenny Irons added 67 yards over 13 carries with a long of 19 yards.
The first BCS poll is out. We’ll talk about that this week as well. There were a few surprises.
