The Georgia Bulldogs–#14 in the preseason polls—wasted no time getting Western Kentucky out of the way. This game was over in the first quarter. Georgia put two TDs and a field goal on the board to take a commanding 17-0 lead after one quarter of play. In the second quarter it was more of the same. Georgia added two more TDs. Western Kentucky managed to get into the end zone as well. Georgia never stopped playing despite their lead. In the end, Georgia won 48-12.
The bulk of the rushing game for Georgia was taken care of by Danny Ware and Thomas Brown. Ware rushed for 68 yards over 6 carries and had a TD. Most of his yards came on a single 41 yard run. Brown had 26 yards over 10 attempts and one TD. His longest run was for 8 yards. Kregg Lumpkin also added a TD with his 26 rushing yards.
As with the running game, the passing game was spread all over the field. The top receiver, Kenneth Harris, only had 33 yards—over one pass. Thomas Brown caught three passes—the most of any Georgia receiver. The two passing TDs were caught by Mario Raley and Coleman Watson. Mikey Henderson returned two punts for a total of 133 yards. One went the distance—it was in the first quarter.
Despite the score, there wasn’t too much offense in the way of yards and both teams were close. Georgia had a combined 295 offensive yards to Western Kentucky’s 193. Still, Georgia made the most of their yards and the two turnovers they received.
