The Ohio State Buckeyes solidified their claim to the number one spot by going down to Texas and beating up the Longhorns. Despite the halftime score of 14-7, Texas was never really in this one. The best thing announcers could say about Texas was that Colt McCoy was a “great name for a Texas quarterback.” I’m sure Texas would rather have showed up than have a great named QB.

Colt McCoy looked flustered and confused on the battlefield. He was 19 of 32 for 154 yards. He threw one TD and one interception. He looked like a young quarterback—no pun intended. The longhorns didn’t fare that much better on the ground. They did have respectable yardage, but they just couldn’t put it all together at once. Texas had 326 total yards on offense—154 in the air and 172 on the ground.

Troy Smith looked great. He looked like a Heisman hopeful. Smith was 17 of 26 for 269 yards. He played mistake free football. Smith threw for 2 touchdowns and had a 10.3 yards per pass average. His first TD strike was a 14 yard pass to Anthony Gonzalez with just a minute to go in the first quarter. His next one proved to be the game winner. It was a 29 yard pass to Ted Ginn Jr. as time was expiring in the first half.

In the new AP top 25 poll, Ohio State remained #1 as expected. They return home this week to face Cincinnati. The Texas Longhorns were dropped to #8, which is gracious on voters part. They look to get back on track when they travel to take on Rice this week. It should be an easy game for them.
