On Saturday the Ohio State Buckeyes dumped Bowling Green 35-7 to remain unbeaten at 6-0. Bowling Green dropped to 3-3. The Buckeyes kept their #1 Top 25 AP ranking this week. Some argue that Florida is slightly better, but most everyone agrees that Florida and Ohio State are the two best teams in the country.
While Ohio State did win 35-7, the stats of the game were not so dominant. Both teams had about the same number of first downs—Ohio State 18 Bowling Green 15. Both got their first downs mainly through the air.
One key factor for Ohio State was their play on third down. They converted 58% of their third down opportunities—7 of 12. Both teams coincidentally ran the same number of plays—63. Bowling Green ended up with 339 yards of total offense while Ohio State finished a little higher with 387 yards. Bowling Green had 21 more yards on the ground, but the Buckeyes—behind Smith—had 69 more passing yards.
Another key stat, time of possession, was almost equal. Bowling Green held the ball for 29:27, while Ohio State barely topped them at 30:33. Like I said earlier, the stats were pretty similar. The difference was the key play execution for both squads.
Ohio State QB Smith was 17 of 20 for 191 yards and 3 TDs. He also ran for 54 yards. His favorite target of the day was Ginn Jr who caught 10 passes. Ginn Jr. had 122 yards receiving on the day, which included one TD from Smith. It was in the 4th quarter—a 57 yard TD strike.
Pittman added 61 yards over 13 carries on the ground for the Buckeyes. He also scored two TDs. Ohio State maintains their top spot in the country and continues on towards a possible national championship game.
