Who would of thought that the Iowa State vs. Toledo game could end up being so exciting? This game quickly became a thriller. It took three overtime periods to decide and we nearly had a fourth. If not for a semi-floated pass to a wide open receiver in the end zone, this game was going to the fourth overtime. Instead, the Iowa State defense got to the pass and stopped the two-point conversion. Iowa State won 45-43.
Iowa State coach, Dan McCarney said, “We’ve had our opportunities and we’ve had our guts torn out in overtime. It’s real good to win one.” McCarney was speaking of the Cyclones inability to win an overtime game. For the moment, that’s all washed away. This was a game that Iowa State deserved to win. Despite having a 12 point second half lead, they gave it up to Toledo. It looked like this game, now that Toledo was in it, could go on for some time.
Toledo is now 0-1, but the coach is proud of his team’s effort. Toledo coach Tom Amstutz said, “We played like winners in my book.” He said he would not view it as a loss, but sports clichés aside, Toledo lost the game and the record will show that regardless of “feelings.” Next up for Iowa State is a home game against UNLV on Sep 9. They will face a much-improved Rebel team. On Sep 9, Toledo will play at Western Michigan.
