NFL Number One Draft Picks – 3 for 12

In light of the Miami Dolphins picking up Michigan OT, Jake Long, in the 2008 NFL draft, I thought we’d see how other top picks have done.

In my mind, the #1 pick in the NFL draft over the last 13 seasons has panned out three times.

In 1997, the Rams got a solid offensive lineman in Orlando Pace.

In 1998, the Colts got top-tier QB in Peyton Manning.

And in 2004, the Giants picked up QB Eli Manning who led them to a Super Bowl victory in 2007.

The busts and unproven players are:

Tim Couch (1999)

Courtney Brown (2000)

Michael Vick (2001)

David Carr (2002)

Carson Palmer (2003)

Alex Smith (2005)

Mario Williams (2006)

JaMarcus Russell (2007)

Jake Long (2008)

Granted, we should cut some slack to everyone from Alex Smith on down as they haven’t had the time yet. But Couch, Brown, Vick, Carr and Palmer have all proven themselves to not be worth the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

Vick was way over-hyped and never amounted to anything but a felon. He may be back, we’ll see.

Palmer is a mid-level QB that many hope will play better. Does he have the potential? If so, he hasn’t shown or proven it despite having high-quality receivers.

Williams may prove himself in the coming years.
Given the money that’s now paid to the #1 pick in the NFL draft, you’d think there would be just a little more consistency.
